Although RedBird Sports (now Jeffmont), was launched in 1985 by Steve ("Red") Cole and Jay ("Bird") Turner, the unofficial "company" began about a decade earlier...

It was in the mid-1970s that Jay first took up golf, perhaps feeling both inspired and obligated by the legacy of his father, Hans, a dominant local amateur who had represented the Seattle area seven times in the National Public Links Tournament.

Immediately, Jay became both enamored with and frustrated by the game, so much so, that he practiced and played almost every day together with his friend and fellow Cleveland High School classmate, James Wong. Jay's home course was Jefferson Park, a city-run property located in his Beacon Hill neighborhood in Seattle. Jefferson Park was also the home course for another friend – local golf prodigy and now famous PGA and Senior PGA Tour Pro, Fred Couples.

Jefferson Park featured a “short nine” (9-hole course) and 18-hole course, along with a driving range. And within the driving range was a small club repair shop.

As much as Jay practiced and played, “progress” (he was already shooting in the low 80’s after just a few months) by his standard was still too slow. After cracking 80 a few times, Jay expected to shoot in the 70’s consistently. Whenever that didn’t happen, his frustration, along with the occasional broken club, would lead him back to the practice range for more work on his swing. Eventually he hit a wall with his swing development. Having a curious mind and being a natural tinkerer, Jay began to look at his golf clubs as possibly being the reason for his lack of improvement.

This marked the beginning of his apprenticeship in club making – repairing his own golf clubs in the range shop and experimenting with different combinations of clubhead types, shaft lengths and flexes, and different club lie angles until eventually he came upon the right specifications for himself! Jay also became so proficient at fixing clubs that he began to build them for friends and other players in the evenings after work in his basement at home. By this time, Jay was a scratch golfer who enjoyed playing the game using his own custom fit, custom crafted set of clubs.

Today, Jeffmont remains heavily influenced by Jay’s hands-on appreciation for classic club design, custom fitting, and crafting a set of clubs one golfer at a time. Jay leads the Jeffmont team including his son Brandon who works closely with Jay in the Fitting Lab and club crafting responsibilities, daughter Allison who handles company communications, and longtime Cleveland High friend and fellow UW Husky business school alumni, James, who oversees marketing.

Our Approach

Our pursuit of designing, fitting, and crafting the world's finest custom made golf clubs originated from this simple thought — "You didn't come off an assembly line. Why settle for clubs that do?”

We quickly grew as golfers – men, women, and children – of all shapes and sizes discovered they could play better golf by enabling their best, natural swings with custom fitted clubs built to meet their unique body dimensions, experience level, and playing goals. Over the past 30+ years we've designed, fitted, and crafted more than 35,000 sets of custom golf clubs, individually tailoring each club to match the specific needs of each golfing client. What prevents the vast majority of golfers from striking the ball solidly and consistently are golf clubs that do not fit. We're working to change that though, a set at a time.

Fitting Worldwide

Our patented Jeffmont Dimensional Fitting System (JDFS) Algorithm is accessible worldwide. We offer a number of ways to be precision fitted. Your optimal club shaft length and lie angle (your "size"), can be determined on our JDFS kiosks, which are deployed at several of our fitting partners. Or by filling out our online fitting evaluation; once you submit it to us, we'll review your information and email a PDF with your fit size and recommended club model and set make up. You may also be served by us or a Jeffmont partner during a demo day or other golf outing where our real-time JDFS Algorithm app is used to provide your optimal fit. Be sure to visit our Events page to check for future activities. You can also be fitted while ordering your clubs on our online shop.

Ordering & Crafting Your Clubs

From our online shop we’re able to fit and craft a set perfectly tailored for you. Info you provide during the ordering process lets us calculate your optimal fit. Once you’ve selected your club set and clicked “Add To Cart,” a Fitting & Personalization form will appear. There are just 12 questions and measurements we need for your fitting. You can personalize your set too with color-matched grips and ferrules and even add your stamped initials and a paintfill color on each clubhead, depending on the model.

With your fit calculated, we handcraft your set with the ideal shaft length, type, and flex; club lie angle; grip size; and, set makeup along with your requested personalization. Each crafting step is meticulously handled; for example clubheads will be matched for weight uniformity, graphite shafts optimized (spined) for consistency, and much more. Learn more about our custom-crafting in the interview with founder, Jay Turner.
